cincinnati reds history

The Cincinnati Reds are an amazing franchise if for no other reason than the fact they set up shop in 1869 and have been there ever since. And, to be fair, they’ve fielded some remarkable teams along the way. These days they are struggling to regain lost dignity while playing in their second new ballpark of the modern era and working on another new manager. Theoretically, Jerry Narron isn’t new in that he got the job last summer; just long enough for him to realize the challenges he faces. But a team that lost 89 games last year will still draw interest in baseball crazy Cincinnati. That’s why fans that purchase Cincinnati Reds tickets are looking forward to another season of pulling for their favorite team.

A team like the Reds is bound to have a long list of questions to be answered. Of course, the only way to find out is to play the games. But fans can’t help but wonder if Ken Griffey Jr. will hold up through the season. Can Eric Milton get people out? Can Jerry Narron manage in this league? But with teams like the Reds, management is trying to keep things together with talent from a bygone era. Graybeards like Tony Womack, Kent Mercker, Quinton McCracken and Dave Weathers will be asked to make contributions while a youngster like Chris Denorfia comes along.

The Reds will score some runs with a healthy Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn and Austin Kearns. But, as Harry Caray used to say; “What about the pitching?” The projected starters are carrying some hefty ERA’s and Eric Milton has been a major disappointment. Don’t sell new GM Wayne Krivsky, as it’s certain he’s noticed and will not stand idly by and allow this team to collapse before the season gets going. He has been presented with a grand opportunity to guide a historic sports franchise back to glory. Trading Sean Casey to the Pirates for lefty Dave Williams is an example of that. Now it’s up to Williams to justify the transaction. If he doesn’t, it’s for sure attendees who purchased Cincinnati Reds tickets will make their feelings known. Cincinnati fans want the “Big Red Machine” to make a comeback in much the same way the once moribund Bengals did last fall.

As always, to get to the post-season and beyond, a solid pitching staff is required. It remains to be seen if GM Krivsky can fortify the roster as the season progresses. With a farm system in a state of reconstruction, it may be the only way. Residents of the Queen City love their baseball and it’s certain they’ll be buying Cincinnati Reds tickets. With a new management team in place, here’s hoping the Reds reward their loyal fans with a dramatic resurgence.
