The New Jersey Devils were named after the legend of the Jersey Devil said to live in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. The team began their run in Kansas City, Missouri in 1974 as the Kansas City Scouts. After a disappointing two seasons, the Devils moved to Denver and became the Colorado Rockies. After a rocky six seasons and only one trip to the playoffs, owner John McMullen moved the franchise to East Rutherford, New Jersey in 1982, hoping the change of venue would bring his team championships and fill the Devils seats.

When Lou Lamoriello was hired as president and general manager in 1987, hope was restored for the Devils ticket holders. With his insight into hockey talent and keen business sense, Lamoriello changed the face of the Devils from a disappointment to a team that was indeed built for championships. He brought in Viacheslav Fetisov, one of the first Soviet-born players to play in the NHL, and the Devils were on their way.

In 1994, after suffering first-round defeats in the playoffs in 1990 and 1993, the Devils began to make headway into respectability among teams and managers in the NHL and their division. Superstars Scott Niedermayer, Claude Lemieux, and Bobby Holik rewarded Devils tickets holders with a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, but lost to the New York Rangers in double overtime of the seventh game.

The New Jersey Devils went on to win three Stanley Cups in the last nine years. They also appeared in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2001, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in seven games. In 1995 they swept the Detroit Red Wings. In 2000, New Jersey ticket holders cheered as the Dallas Stars fell to the Devils in game six and in 2003 they won the best of seven series 4-3 against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Martin Brodeur, Scott Stevens, Scott Niedermayer, Ken Daneyko, and Sergei Brylin each won their third Stanley Cup as a member of the Devils.

To the delight of New Jersey Devils ticket holders, in February of 2005 the New Jersey Devils signed an agreement with the city of Newark to build a new hockey arena that is expected to open in 2007. It’s new ice, a new arena, a new age for the New Jersey Devils to bring home the Stanley Cup.
