The Breeders Cup is considered one of the highlights of thoroughbred racing, bringing the best mounts in the world together on one track, which alternates every year, to see which horse is truly the best.
The 2006 Breeders Cup is scheduled to hit the famed Churchill Downs on November 4, 2006. The Breeders Cup World Championships consists of eight races, all designed to put the top horses, and the best jockeys, together on the track at the same time.
But to get to the Breeders Cup, a horse will have to prove itself over the course of a season. The action begins in the summer and runs through the fall with a string of stake races that eliminates all but the very finest horses. In 2006, the Breeders Cup comes down to eight races:
- The Alberto VO5 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies – The top 2-year old fillies hit the track for a 1 1/16 mile race that rewards the winner with a $1 Million purse.
- Bessemer Trust Breeders Cup Juvenile - $1.5 Million is at stake here in this race limited to colts and geldings.
- Emirates Airline Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf- With a $1 Million purse again at stake, it’s a mile and a half of thundering 3-year olds in a race to the finish line.
- TVG Breeders Cup Sprint – At 6 furlongs, and another Million on the line, this is a thoroughbred race of pure speed.
- NetJet Breeders Cup Mile – The stakes are even higher in this one as the money grows to $1.5 Million on a grass track.
- Emirates Airlines Breeders Cup Distaff – Another contest on grass that tests the endurance of mares and fillies on a 1 1/8 mile track. The Distaff in 2006 is dangling a $2 Million payoff to the top horse.
- John Deere Breeders Cup Turf – Another $2 Million purse pushes both horse and jockey to the limit on 1 ½ mile grass track.
- Breeders Cup Classic, Powered by Dodge – The biggest Breeders Cup race of them all, the Breeders Cup Classic is 1 ¼ mile race on dirt carrying the biggest purse of the day at $4 Million.
