While the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees absorb the majority of the attention in the rugged American League East, the Orioles appear poised to make some noise in the 2006 season. Anchored by a young, talented pitching staff and MVP shortstop Miguel Tejada, Baltimore has all the makings of a contender. But those ingredients have been hanging around Camden Yards for a few years now with little to show for it. New manager Sam Perlozzo is looking to change that.
Perlozzo will have a pair of young horses atop his pitching rotation in Danny Carbrera and Rodrigo Lopez to set-up bullpen ace LaTroy Hawkins. Kris Benson also arrives to provide some depth to the staff. Lefty Eric DuBose has shown potential, and crafty veteran Bruce Chen has been know to chew up some innings. Still, the Orioles will be in need of some offensive support. They should have plenty.
Second basemen Brian Roberts, an All-Star in 2005, and Tejada team up on the left side of the infield to provide the Orioles with a potent double-play combination. While sometimes his competitiveness and desire to win causes a disruption, Tejada has proven to be one of the best shortstops in all of baseball. Jay Gibbons is on the verge of a breakout season. If he blossoms as expected, the Oriole offense will be explosive and fun to watch, especially with the off-season acquisition of former Boston slugger Kevin Millar.
The baseball in Baltimore promises to be better. But even if it’s not, don’t pass up the opportunity to visit Baltimore’s beautiful ballpark, Camden Yards. It’s provides the perfect mix of modern amenities and old-time appeal. Baltimore Orioles tickets are truly a treat for fans of all ages.
