The Kansas City Chiefs were a founding member of the American Football League in 1960, starting life as the Dallas Texans. It took head coach Hank Stram until 1962 to obtain the right personnel for his wide-open offensive philosophy that changed the game of football. Stram used veteran quarterback Len Dawson and a powerful running game to capture their first AFL Championship in 1962.

The team moved to Kansas City in 1963 and changed their name to the Chiefs. After winning the AFL Championship again in 1966, the Chiefs faced off against the rival NFL Champion Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl I. In 1969, Chiefs ticket holders watched their team win their third AFL title. Stram had assembled a team loaded with talent, including linebacker Bobby Bell and kicker Jan Stenerud. This Kansas City Chiefs team would once again advance to the Super Bowl, where they would make history by defeating the Minnesota Vikings 23-7, a victory many believe was instrumental in creating the merger between the NFL and the AFL that occurred a year later.

The Chiefs went on to win the AFC Western Division title in 1971. Stram and his Chiefs would once again make football history by playing in the longest NFL game on record, a playoff game against the Miami Dolphins that lasted over 82 minutes.

After a span of 14 years in which the Chiefs reached the playoffs only once (1986), head coach Marty Schottenheimer stamped the Chiefs tickets back to the NFL playoffs. Beginning in 1990, Schottenheimer led his team to a string of six postseason appearances and a division title in 1993, behind talent like Marcus Allen and Joe Montana.

Dick Vermeil took over in 2001, and immediately set out to build a team around quarterback Trent Green and running back Priest Holmes. The result was an AFC West Division Championship in 2003 and 2004 and the highest scoring offense in Kansas City Chiefs history.
