wimbledon history

Held from June 26th to June 9th this year, Wimbledon Tennis Tournament tickets are sure to be in high demand this year. The oldest and most prestigious event in tennis, Wimbledon in the third of the Grand Slam tournaments and is played in a complex of tennis courts in England. With players such as Venus and Serena Williams, Andy Roddick  and Rodger Federer, this year’s tournament promises to be one of unprecedented excitement and intensity.

Different from the rest of its Grand Slam family, the Wimbledon offers events to all different types of tennis athletes. Championships include the traditional men and women’s singles and doubled and mixed doubles along with youth tournaments. However, there are also special invitational tournaments held for 35 and over gentlemen’s doubles, 45 and over gentlemen’s doubles, 35 and over ladies’ doubles and wheelchair doubles. In addition, Wimbledon is the only one of the Grand Slam four to be played on grass courts. In the beginning, along with the other Grand Slam events, Wimbledon was played by top-ranked amateur players. However, since the occurrence of the open era in 1968, it is now open to pros and amateurs alike. One of the most ironic facts about Wimbledon is that, although it is played on British soil, no British man has won the singles event there since Fred Perry in 1936, causing a sense of anguish amongst British tennis fans.

New this year, a museum will open dedicated to the Wimbledon championship. On April 12, 2006, H.R.H. the Duke of Kent will declare the brand new Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum open to the public. One feature of the museum includes a state-of-the-art 200° screen which will be used to show fans the science behind tennis. Another exhibit combines an old technique called “Pepper’s Ghost” with current projection and filming technology to take fans on a behind-the-scenes tour of the 1980’s gentlemen’s dressing room with tennis pro John McEnroe. McEnroe talks about his experiences he had in this off-limits area, including meeting Jimmy Connors. Of course a Wimbledon museum would not be complete with a display of the progression of fashions worn throughout the history of the tournament. Along with this display is a feature where visitors can feel the weight difference between men and women’s clothing in 1884. These are only a few of the new and innovative features distributed throughout the museum.

As the third event in the list of Grand Slam tournaments, Wimbledon champs are sure to keep things interesting for fans. With its originality and fast-paced action, Wimbledon Tennis Tournament tickets are without a doubt a necessary investment for tennis fans.
