The Champs Sports Bowl is entering its 17th year of play. The 2005 Champs Sports Bowl featured the Clemson Tigers and the Colorado Buffaloes, both winning teams in tough divisions, and they showed why they were winners when they butted heads in the Citrus Bowl. Clemson’s James Davis won MVP honors in the game with a spectacular performance rushing 150 yards on 28 carries to lead the Tigers in offensive output. Clemson’s quarterback, Charlie Whitehurst, made the Champs Sports bowl his last stop as a college player before leaving for the NFL.
Whitehurst opened the game by leading the Tigers on a 10 play 70 yard drive resulting in a filed goal to give Clemson the early lead. Colorado responded with their own field goal as the second quarter opened to tie the game at three. Defensively, both teams were at their peak, bending but nor breaking. Clemson drove 67 yards in the second quarter to get their second filed goal and the Champs Sports Bowl ended the first half with the Tigers leading Colorado 6-3.
The first touchdown of the game came in the third quarter as Charlie Whitehurst scored on a five yard run to end an eight play 67 yard drive. But the Buffaloes weren’t finished either. Colorado put together a scoring drive of their own, going 69 yards in 6 plays to score on a two yard pass from quarterback Brian White to pull within 13-10 of the Tigers. With the game so close, Clemson started a time consuming drive that covered 61 yards in seven plays before James Davis capped off his night with a six yard run into the end zone to hold off the Buffaloes and end the scoring.
