hawaii bowl history
This December 24, the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl will once again be played at Aloha Stadium on the beautiful island of Oahu. Every year on Christmas or Christmas Eve, the Hawaii Bowl matches up a team from either the PAC-10 or Conference USA against a team from the Western Athletic Conference. Sheraton Hotels and Resorts Hawaii has sponsored the game every year except for the inaugural year. Regardless of its standings in the WAC, Hawaii had an implied bid up until 2005 when the agreement was retracted when the WAC lost a bowl bid.
Last years Hawaii Bowl featured an overtime thriller that saw Nevada win over the University of Central Florida by only one point with the final score of 49 to 48. With less than four minutes to play in regulation, Nevada was in control with a ten-point lead over Central Florida, but UCF refused to go away quietly. Central Florida was able to capitalize on some big opportunities to make up those much needed points and force overtime against Nevada. The overtime session was hotly contested and both teams scored touchdowns, but Matt Prater of UCF missed an extra point attempt that sailed wide right and handed Nevada the one-point win.
B.J. Mitchell and Robert Hubbard came up big for Nevada with a combined 304 yards of offence that were highlighted by Hubbard’s three touchdowns. The Wolf Pack finished with a record of 9-3, their best overall season since 1996. Nevada will have a lot of competition this year as they try and surpass the success of last year’s bowl winning year.
The teams of the Western Athletic Conference and Conference USA will be competing hard throughout the year as they try to garner bids to some of the big bowl games this year, including the Hawaii Bowl. The participants in the Hawaii Bowl have the added bonus of being able to play in such a beautiful and exotic location like Oahu. Boise State, San Jose State, and New Mexico State are all strong contenders in the Western Athletic Conference and any of these exciting teams could be the team that will earn the bid to the Hawaii Bowl this year.
As bowl season approaches, the games in the regular season mean more and more to those teams that are looking to make a bowl appearance this year. Teams that do not compete for a national championship title can still bring a lot of honor to their team and their school by securing a good record and taking home a bowl trophy. Whether you live in Hawaii, are traveling there for fun, or just want to be there to see your favorite Western Athletic Conference or Conference USA team play in the Hawaii Bowl, you can be sure to be a part of the game if you allow us to handle all your Hawaii Bowl tickets or tickets to any of the other exciting games being played during bowl season.
