Wake-up, Canada: American college football is headed your way, and International Bowl tickets are the key to witnessing a historic moment for the football-starved fans north of the border. For the first time in 70 years, a college football bowl game will be played outside of the United States. Standout programs from the Big East and Mid-American Conferences will collide on Jan. 6 at Toronto’s beautiful Rogers Centre in Toronto for the first ever International Bowl.
You have to go way back to 1937 to find the last bowl game played outside the United States. That game, which was known as the Bacardi Bowl, matched Auburn and Villanova and was played at La Tropical Stadium in Havana, Cuba of all places. Auburn and Villanova, playing in a hostile environment 22 years before Fidel Castro’s reign, tied 7-7 in the last bowl game to be played on foreign soil.
There would be six Barcardi Bowls in all, but this will be the first ever International Bowl, and it promises to be a memorable experience for those lucky college football fans who get buy International Bowl tickets. The Big East and Mid-American Conferences will be looking to put on a show to remember. And the two conferences certainly have the firepower to deliver one of the most exciting bowl games of the season.
Led by Louisville and West Virginia, the Big is proving to be one of the top conferences in the nation. And don’t forget about the resurgent Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. Head coach Greg Schiano has completely turned around the Rutgers program, making the Scarlet Knights a threat to make their second consecutive bowl appearance after a lengthy drought.
But International Bowl ticket holders shouldn’t expect the MAC to lie down. The Mid-American Conference also has its fair share of rising programs. Western Michigan and Toledo have both shown the ability to knock around the big boys from bigger conferences. Western Michigan stunned Virginia, and Toledo beat North Carolina State earlier in the season. The MAC also has a reputation for producing NFL-caliber quarterbacks. Big Ben Roethlisberger of Pittsburgh Steelers fame played at Miami of Ohio, and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Charlie Frye ran the show at Akron.
The Big East won’t be intimidated by names, though. It’s produced more than its share of big-time NFL stars, like Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb (Syracuse), St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger (West Virginia), former New York Jets running back Curtis Martin (Pittsburgh) and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (Pittsburgh).
