The Coach: Urban Meyer was a wanted man when he landed in Gainesville, Fla., to be the head coach of the Florida Gators before the 2005 season. He even turned down a chance to coach at Notre Dame to accept the position at Florida, replacing current Illinois head coach Ron Zook.
He first made a name for himself by instantly turning Bowling Green into a MAC power. Then, Meyer headed to Utah, where he the Fighting Utes to the Fiesta Bowl in 2004. It was the first time a non-BCS school had earned an invitation to play in a BCS bowl game.
In his short tenure at Florida, Meyer has made the Gators a threat in the SEC once again. In his first season at Florida, the Gators took down their three biggest rivals in Georgia, Florida State and Tennessee and earned a spot in the Outback Bowl, where they took care of the Iowa Hawkeyes in impressive fashion.
No one ever thought Steve Spurrier could be replaced in Florida. The Old Ball Coach made Florida football what it is. But Meyer is out to prove that he can take the Gators to an entire other level, one where SEC Championships, bowl games and national titles are the norm. And where losing simply isn’t allowed.
The Gators are dreaming big things in the 2006 NCAA college football season. A trip to the SEC Championship game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta would be nice.
