It’s once again time to start paying attention to Nebraska Cornhuskers tickets. Callahan has scrapped the Cornhuskers’ traditional wishbone option offense and in favor of a pro-style passing attack that has been torching defenses all across the Big 12. Of course, the Huskers’ vaunted black-shirt defense is still making Memorial Stadium a miserable place to be for opposing offenses.
The Stadium: Memorial Stadium was opened on Oct. 20, 1923 and has been expanded six times. In the beginning, the stadium seated just 31,000 Nebraska Cornhusker football ticket holders. But these days, more than 81,000 screaming college football fans can pack into Memorial Stadium to see the Cornhuskers battle the NCAA’s top programs in the Big 12 Conference. Nebraska holds the record for most consecutive sellouts, and when the stadium fills up around Tom Osbourne Field, there’s actually more people there than any other city in the state, except for Lincoln and Omaha. As you can tell, the entire state of Nebraska loves Cornhuskers tickets.
The Coach: Callahan arrived in Lincoln after a six-year stint in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders, the last two as head coach. In his first season as head coach in Oakland, he led the Raiders to the 2002 AFC Championship Game and a spot in Super Bowl XXXVII.
He suffered through a dismal 4-12 mark the next year and was shown the door out of Oakland. He landed on his feet in Philadelphia, as the Eagles’ offensive line coach, before coming to Nebraska in the 2004 season. His first two years in Huskerland were nothing spectacular, but things began turn around in 2005.
Recent Success: Last December, Nebraska capped off an 8-4 season with a shocking defeat of Michigan 32-28 in the Alamo Bowl. The win was historic because the Cornhuskers had not beaten a ranked team in Callahan’s tenure, and it caused quite the spike in expectations for the 2006 college football season.
Led by quarterback Zach Taylor, the Huskers appear to have settled into their head coach’s west-coast philosophy. There putting up points in bunches and piling up the victories, which is not an easy task in the brutal Big 12. The Cornhuskers face USC, Kansas, Iowa State, Kansas State, Texas, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Texas A&M and of course their annually Thanksgiving weekend game against the Colorado Buffaloes. If Nebraska manages to navigate through those tough games, Callahan and company could be headed for a trip to the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship.
