After eleven victories and a bowl win for the first time in three years, it’s no wonder that Virginia Tech Hokies’ tickets are flying out of the box offices. Under the direction of head coach Frank Beamer, the team is being restructured this season to fill in the gaps left by graduating seniors and dismissed players. Now, the Hokies prepare to step onto the field in Lane Stadium ready for another shot at a national title.
Although the Hokies had what no one could deny was an outstanding season, their success seems to have been overshadowed. After a 27-22 loss against Florida State in the ACC Championship game and an addition defeat to long-time rival Miami at home, the incredible season that the team had appeared lost in the eyes of fans. Then in the Gator Bowl against Louisville, an exciting 35-24 win was lost in the shadows when quarterback Marcus Vick stepped on the chest of a Cardinals defenseman between plays. Keeping in mind the 17 penalties that were called on the Hokies, the five personal fouls in only the first half and the ejection of All-American cornerback Jimmy Williams in the ACC title game, this move seemed to exemplify a bad habit that had settled in on the team. After the incident, Vick was subsequently kicked off the team by coach Beamer. The list of on and off the field occurrences left fans questioning the ability of Virginia Tech by the end of the season. When their year finished, two losses in their last five games cost them a shot at a national title.
Now, the team comes back minus both Williams and Vick in addition to three All-ACC linebackers including tight end Jeff King. Also missing from the team this year are defensive linemen such as All-ACC Darryl Tapp, and steady linebacker James Anderson. In all, six starters from both the offense and defense have left open slots in the team, most of whom were seniors who graduated after four years and 39 wins. Now, the team turns to young talent and new faces to fill in the vacancies left behind by the graduates. In the off-season, coach Beamer placed his main focus on his offense and of course, special teams. The staff has brought in four new coaches this season, the biggest turnover Beamer’s staff since 1992. Together, the coaches are working to put together a strong offense that will not only replace, but excel over last season’s. His ability to put so much energy into this side of the ball all comes thanks to Bud Foster’s dominating defensive line. Last year, the team allowed just 247.6 yards and 12.9 points per game. While they will be coming into the new season with five new starters, the staff doesn’t seem to be worried. I think what we are is a defense that is going to play very well," coach Beamer explained. "We developed some depth at a couple more positions."
Although fans are questioning the team’s new offensive situation, that hasn’t stopped them from grabbing as many Virginia Tech Hokies tickets as they can. This season, the team comes back ready to focus on playing the game instead of causing drama. With this new attitude, there is no doubt that this year could see the Hokies competing for the national title.
