Ironically, NFL fans in Houston need to tip their hat to the NHL for helping bring professional football back to the city. For 36 years, the Houston faithful had cheered on the powder-blue uniforms of the Houston Oilers. They lived and died with every Earl Campbell powerful run and every Warren Moon touchdown pass. But not everybody was pleased. Oilers owner Bud Adams settled a lawsuit with the city and jumped ship for Tennessee after the 1996 season, leaving Houston with out a professional football team for the first time since 1960.
Houston football fans wouldn’t be deprived of the NFL for too long. In June 1997, the NHL shunned Chuck Watson and Bob McNair’s attempts to bring an expansion hockey team to Houston. The businessmen turned their focus to bringing the NFL back to Houston. Two years after being turned down by the NHL, the NFL owners awarded McNair the 32nd NFL franchise on Oct. 6 for a record amount of $700 million.
In March of 2000, “Houston NFL 2002” broke ground on what was to be Reliant Field. That September, the Houston Texans were born. McNair chose the nickname Texans over the Apollos and Stallions. The ceremony, during which McNair unveiled the team’s nickname, logo and colors, drew thousands and was broadcast live by ESPN2. Dom Capers was hired as head coach in January of 2001. Capers selected quarterback David Carr with the first overall pick in the 2002 NFL draft, the original draft selection by the Texans. Four months later, 69,904 fans bought Houston Texans tickets and packed into sparking Reliant Field to see their new hometown team. Carr threw two touchdowns, as the Texans became the first NFL team in 41 years to win their expansion debut with a stunning 19-10 victory over in-state rival the Dallas Cowboys.
Once upon a time, Warren Moon and the Oilers ruled Houston. These days, Houston Texans tickets are the hottest ticket around. David Carr has endeared himself to Texan faithful with his toughness and competitiveness. Andre Johnson has emerged into one of the top young receivers in the NFL, and Domanick Davis is one of only 13 NFL back in the last 20 years to rush for at least 1,000 yards in his each of his first two seasons. With newly acquired Phillip Buchannon and 2004 first-round draft pick Dunta Robinson, the Texans boast an exciting young secondary. Is this the year the Texans reach their potential? The best way to find out is by picking up Houston Texans tickets today.
