The San Francisco 49ers began life in 1946 as a member of the All America Football Conference, before joining the NFL in 1949. Under the leadership of head coach Frankie Albert and quarterback Y.A. Tittle, San Francisco reached the NFL postseason for the first time in 1957. After a dry spell, the 49ers struck gold with the hiring of head coach Dick Nolan in 1968. Basing his attack around a strong defense and the talents of quarterback John Brodie, Nolan took San Francisco to the playoffs three years in a row beginning in 1970. Even with the early success, the 49ers didn’t reach their glory years until Hall of Fame head coach Bill Walsh was hired in 1979.
Walsh turned the team around by drafting a quarterback out of Notre Dame by the name of Joe Montana. Within two years 49ers tickets allowed fans to see their team go from the cellar to the penthouse, capturing their first Super Bowl title in 1982 with a 26-21 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI. 49ers ticket holders enjoyed the beginning of a period of unprecedented success for their team with a string of winning seasons and playoff appearances in 11 of the next 12 years.
During that time span the 49ers won four more Super Bowls with a changing cast of players and coaches. Walsh led the 49ers to two more Super Bowl victories, capturing Super Bowl XIX 38-16 over the Miami Dolphins, and retiring after a 20-16 win in Super Bowl XXIII
In 1985, wide receiver Jerry Rice was drafted out of Mississippi Valley State. Rice became the greatest receiver in the history of the NFL. The addition of Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young, who took over from Montana in 1991, continued the 49ers dominance. Young led the NFL in passing for four straight years before capping things off with a victory in Super Bowl XXIX, in which he passed for a record six touchdowns in the 49ers 49-26 win over the San Diego Chargers.
